Deb Rodriguez from Peace United Church of Christ in El Paso thought folks might like to know what happened after they left Saturday afternoon! She sent us the photos below.
She writes:
First of all, Peace United Church of Christ and Iglesia La Trinidad in El Paso, and First Christian in Las Cruces hope you enjoyed your visit to our region.
As you all were heading home, Rich Dorr-Peacock and Dr. Toni hung around in El Paso for another day. Saturday, we enjoyed dinner at Forti’s Mexican Elder, checked out the former Valley Congregational Church and original Valley Community Foundation Food Pantry, saw what’s going on with the migrants/sanctuary seekers in the Segundo Barrio and at Sacred Heart Church.
Sunday, we had an uplifting service led by Pastors Ric and Lynn Brightman. Dr. Toni thanked us for our hospitality. Then we headed to a local restaurant, Tarahumara, for authentic (truly!) food from Mexico. (Although Dr. Toni played it safe with pancakes and eggs ). Later we cruised the Camino Real, marveling at the old adobe missions of San Elizario, Socorro, and Ysleta. In the meantime, we pointed out the Border fence, and got to see the expansive Borderplex of El Paso, Texas, Las Cruces, New Mexico, and Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico from the vantage point of Scenic Drive (at the southern-most end of the Rocky Mountains).
Exhausted, but exhilarated, we closed another chapter of United Church of Christ Southwest Conference History.
Thanks, Deb!
